5 Reasons Everyone Should Sail In Santorini

Whether you are in Santorini for 2 days or a week, do not miss out the experience of sailing around this incredible island.

Of the five days we spent in Santorini, the best day by far was the full day sailing excursion adventures – for only 35 euros! From hiking the active volcano, the Caldera, to swimming in natural hot springs, racing donkeys up a cliff, and of course, the majestic sunset on top of Oia, I could not have asked for a better adventure. Below are the top highlights and photos from an incredible day sailing the Aegean Sea.

1. THE CALDERA

The Caldera is an ancient, but active volcano dating back to 1650 B.C. Its explosions and reformations over the years have formed some of islands within the Cyclades complex, specifically within the South Aegean Volcanic Arc – Methana, Milos, Santorini and Nisyros. The volcano is dormant, so it is safe for adventurous travelers to explore around with its last eruption in 1950.

Fun fact: One of the eruptions during the 17th century B.C. is said to have inspired the legend of Atlantis.

2. NEA KAMENA ISLET

3. DIP IN THE NATURAL HOT SPRINGS

Tip: Grab and handful of the nutrient rich mud at the bottom of the shallow hot springs and lather all over body and face and enjoy a free facial and body mud wrap from Mother Nature. Feel free to share this tip with other bathers, but don’t expect everyone to believe it.

4. LUNCH IN AMOUDI BAY

Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at Taverna Katina all the way on the far end for the best views of Amoudi Bay. You know it’s fresh when you try to order several things on the menu and they either reply in broken English “sorry, we didn’t catch that today” or “we just ran out.” Don’t be discouraged, everything they cook up is delicious. A funny , yummy menu item is “Little Feet” which is an incredible fried eggplant dish. Kale oreski! Bon appetite!

After lunch, feel free to explore and walk around the port. There are donkeys and a small path that leads to the opposite side for another equally gorgeous view of the Aegean landscape.

5. DONKEY RIDES UP A CLIFF

Donkey rides – Super fun and basically a right of passage when traveling to Oia. One thing they don’t tell you is that the donkeys can  take off and race each other up the narrow, steep path. Don’t worry, keep calm and donkey kong.

And if you’re not into sailing, there’s so many other things to see and do in Santorini.
